(CNN) -- A 23-year-old man was arrested Sunday in the death of a former "American Idol" contestant, who was struck by a car in New Jersey, authorities said.

Alexis Cohen's body was found on a street in the town of Seaside Heights early Saturday, said Michael Mohel, Ocean County deputy prosecutor. An autopsy indicated that she had suffered head trauma and multiple injuries, including to her abdomen and chest.

Daniel Bark was arrested Sunday evening and is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail, Mohel said.

Bark, of Toms River, New Jersey, is charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident, according to Mohel.

Cohen appeared in auditions of the television show in 2008 and 2009.

I admit that I'd never heard of her before this but after watching the video I feel like I know her. What an amazing spirit.

And I'm sorry but I thought she had a great singing voice, too. A little limited maybe but still very powerful.

Mother of Alexis Cohen speaks about daughter’s third American Idol audition

Alexis Cohen, killed Saturday morning by a hit and run driver, auditioned for American Idol a third time, earlier in 2009.Alexis Cohen, who was killed by a hit a run driver on Saturday morning, had two publicized American Idol auditions. But her mother is saying she auditioned a third time earlier this year in Boston. To see her first two auditions, click here.

Mindy Dallow said her daughter chose a country son for her last, still unseen audition. “I said to her, ‘You have a country music sound, pick a country music song, that is where your voice lays,’” said Dallow. She thinks the song was by the group Rascal Flatts.

According to Lehigh Valley Live, Cohen was preparing for a call-back audition.

When being told by police her daughter had been killed, Dallow said, “It took all I had to hold my head up. She was 25-years-old with big dreams. She could have achieved her dreams.”

According to Dallow, Cohen went to New Jersey to the Six Flags Adventure amusement park. She was walking to get something to eat when she was struck by the car.

Prosecutors said they are looking for the driver, who authorities have told Dallow may have been a drunk driver. They also told her they have some leads.

Dallow said of the driver, “When I get him, I own him.”

Of her daughter, Dallow said, “In a way, ‘American Idol’ appreciated her rowdy ways, she got them ratings. All she wanted to be is basically loved. She wanted people to look through the bravado… The only thing I can say is God has a purpose for everything and he takes away the good… She was a very good girl. She had a good nature.”

Cohen’s funeral will be held on Friday at 9:00 a.m. at Knopp Funeral Home at 46 Susquehann St. in Allentown, Pa.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS — Police arrested a 23-year-old Toms River man in connection with the death of "American Idol" contestant Alexis Cohen.

Daniel Bark was arrested at 6 p.m. Sunday in Atlantic Highlands on charges of causing Cohen's death by reckless driving and then leaving the scene of the collision.

If convicted, Bark could serve 10 to 15 years. Bark is being held in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River in lieu of $35,000 bail.

The "American Idol" hopeful was killed after a motor vehicle struck her early Saturday morning and was found 350 yards from the Bay Boulevard lot where police found her car.

The nature of Alexis Cohen's abdomen, chest and head injuries led police to rule the cause of her death was vehicular homicide, police said.

It is unclear whether Alexis Cohen, 24, of Allentown, Pa., had been returning to her car when she was struck, said Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Police were notified at 5:05 a.m. Saturday by a driver and passenger who saw the body while passing the intersection of Bay Boulevard and Dupont Avenue, Mohel said.

Earlier news reports stated police were notified around 4 a.m.

Cohen was pronounced dead at 6:30 a.m., police said.

Mohen said "an extensive investigation" led to Bark's arrest.

"American Idol" viewers might remember her angry yet empowered, partially censored post-rejection rant aired during the show's seventh season.

Last year for Season 8, she also auditioned unsuccessfully.

Mohel was contacted about Cohen's death Sunday by a slew of media organizations, including CNN, MSNBC, NBC, People magazine, FOX News and the New York Daily News, he said.
