I think you are exactly right. It is highly unprofessional to announce that you 'quit' while still having a contractual obligation to an employer, or agency.
The girl has been saying 'goodbye' for a month now, mostly on her facebook page. It gets her lots of sympathy and attention.

Lol, what are you, a conspiracy theorist? IMG obviously has much more important things to do than getting a newcomer off their website. Agencies usually take ages to put girls on or off their boards, I remember how long it took for them to put Ann and Brittani on their boards. Besides, Brittani doesn't owe them anything and they agreed to her quitting anyway.
She obviously cares for her fans and wants them to know what she's up to, thus explaining her moves in deleting facebook pages and such.
